Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro

I did a maymester abroad in Tanzania in May 2019. We were based in Moshi, Tanzania, then we took a trip out to the coast to Zanzibar, where we learned a lot of valuable information about the East African slave trade, and how it is less known but still just as tragic. We also got to snorkle is the coral reef in Zanzibar.

After that we went back to Moshi for a bit, and eventually to Ngorongoro crater and on to the Serengeti to safari for a few days. We got to camp in the Serengeti in very nice tents, glamping if you would, and it was the experience of a lifetime. You can to be escorted to your tent at all times in case there are animals wandering around. The second night there, a lion actually leaned up against me in my tent and laid there! It was in the middle of the night and I had to be super still, I was so stressed and then I told them the next morning that some animal had been leaning on me, and they said it was probably a lion because there was a bunch of them wandering the camp that night.

After all of this and many other adventures, we got to spend a week reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro. The stars, the sunrise over Africa, the scenery, all of it was the experience of a lifetime. You go very slowly up the mountain when you summit, so the hiking itself is not too bad, just the lack of oxygen will make your lungs burn after a while. It was absolutely worth it though, and the people is Tanzania were just so sweet, they were always ready to help with whatever you needed and I feel so lucky to get to have experienced a month of my life there.
